the attending mode

or: babe you're standing on somebody else's floor

by cassie h. and jake g.

0. what this is

there is a figure who is calm about something that should terrify everyone, and whose calm other people can stand on. not comforted by. stand on. they start doing things they could not do before, inside the space that figure's composure opens.

criticism has names for pieces of this. mentor. stoic. the competent professional. the watson device. scaffolding. holding environment. none of them name the whole, and the ones that come closest sit in four literatures that do not cite each other.

so the contribution here is not the discovery. the pieces were already lying around. what follows is the assembly, the mechanism that runs it, two constraints on when it works, and nine propositions that can be checked against the archive.

call the figure the attending. call what they generate the floor.

1. the definition

a narrative runs in the attending mode when five conditions hold at once.

one. an extraordinary situation. circumstances exceeding the ordinary competence of everyone present. violence, catastrophe, political crisis, epistemic overwhelm.

two. a figure of resolved relation. one character relates to those circumstances as operational. what registers to everyone else as an emergency registers to them as a sequence of steps.

three. transmissibility. the composure functions as usable ground for at least one other character. they begin acting inside it.

four. instruction is given. the figure orients others toward action with an implicit clause: proceed as directed and this holds.

this condition needs sharpening, because as usually stated it does no work. saying the figure "orients others toward action" restates condition three. what earns it a separate line is that instruction is issued, flatly, as procedure. that separates the mode from contagious calm, where composure spreads by proximity and nobody is told anything.

five. retained capacity. the figure could intervene decisively and does not. the forbearance is a choice.

condition five is doing more work than it looks like. bagehot (1873) supplies its cleanest statement outside fiction: the lender of last resort stabilizes by announcing it will lend, and the announcement works whether or not lending occurs. the floor operates through guaranteed availability. frequency of use is irrelevant. bosk's (1979) surgical ethnography documents the same structure in the teaching hospital, where graduated autonomy is pedagogically valuable in proportion to the reliability of the oversight, and not in proportion to how often it fires.

on the medical metaphor. the attending physician names four properties: cost already metabolized and offstage, calm directed outward as an instrument, situation genuinely extraordinary, intervention available and withheld. the four properties do the work. the metaphor is a mnemonic for them and nothing rests on it.

2. the four confusions

four existing categories overlap the mode and have absorbed instances belonging to it.

the mentor. miyagi, iroh, obi-wan sit fully inside the mode. the confusion is that anglophone narrative terminates the mentor relationship by killing the mentor, so reliably that campbell (1949) encoded the termination as structurally necessary. §11 argues the convention is dramatic economy and detaches from the mode cleanly.

the stoic. stoic composure is a property of an interior and stops there. attending composure is a property of the room. the test is inside the text: does anyone else's behavior change in the figure's presence. a stoic under fire stays a stoic. an attending under fire produces subordinates who act.

the affectively warm protagonist. marge gunderson, samwise, paddington, tohru honda stabilize the people around them out of kindness or a conviction about human decency. the foundation is ethical. the attending's foundation is epistemic, and the difference shows under subtraction. take hannibal lecter's benevolence away, which is easy since he has none, and the floor is intact. take paddington's decency away and there is no bear.

that subtraction is load-bearing for everything downstream, because it establishes that the mode has no moral valence. §7.

the sealed professional. jef costello in le samouraï and every version of agent 47 have total operational composure that transmits to nobody. the calm is dissociative and private. nobody leaves a scene with such a figure feeling more capable. melville's le cercle rouge is the useful boundary case, since corey occasionally does generate ground for his confederates, which locates the edge.

3. the mechanism

the puzzle is why composure should transfer at all. one person being calm is not obviously a resource for anyone else.

luhmann (1979) supplies the answer. trust reduces social complexity: it lets an actor proceed as though certain contingencies were settled, which makes action possible where full calculation would paralyze. the attending is a complexity-reduction device with a face on it. their presence lets the resident stop holding the full space of catastrophic outcomes and attend to the immediate task.

this predicts the phenomenology exactly. kate macer in sicario is not comforted by alejandro. she is narrowed. the set of things she must simultaneously hold gets smaller in his presence, and the shrinkage is what lets her function during the border ambush. guillam's job in tinker tailor becomes possible because smiley converted an unbounded problem, find the mole at the top of an intelligence service, into a bounded one: retrieve these files.

laing (1960) and giddens (1990) name the resulting state. ontological security: the settled background confidence in the continuity of one's world that ordinary agency runs on. the attending manufactures it locally, for whoever is inside the field. giddens notes that ontological security is invisible until disrupted, which is why §9's aftermath grammar is where the mode becomes most legible.

the metabolized cost. the composure is characteristically funded by a prior catastrophe the narrative keeps offstage. miyagi lost his wife and child in an internment camp. iroh besieged ba sing se for six hundred days and buried his son there. alejandro's family was destroyed by the cartel he now hunts. rudolf abel has spent a career inside an apparatus that would discard him without a second thought.

the function of the hidden cost is to make the calm legible as earned. a figure who is calm because nothing has ever happened to them generates no floor, since their calm carries no information about survivability. a figure who is calm having already survived the worst carries a proposition: this is survivable, and here is the receipt.

dreyfus and dreyfus (1986) describe top-stage expertise as the disappearance of deliberation into fluid situational response. the attending's composure is that disappearance with an affective surface, and its legibility depends on the audience inferring that the fluidity was bought.

4. the interiority tax

proposition 1. a floor's load-bearing capacity varies inversely with the depth of present-tense interiority the narrative renders for the attending figure.

the derivation runs through §3. complexity-reduction works by letting the resident treat the floor as a fixed parameter, something they can condition on without checking. interiority converts a parameter into a variable. once the reader sees effort, doubt, cost being paid in the moment, the ground is visibly contingent on a psychology that could fail, and a variable cannot be conditioned on. the reduction stops.

and the usual statement of this proposition contradicts §3. if interiority destroys the floor, then disclosing that iroh lost his son should destroy iroh's floor. it does the opposite. §3 says the disclosure is what makes the calm legible as earned.

the two claims are compatible once indexed by tense, and the indexing is the repair. past-tense interiority discloses a finished state: the cost was paid, the parameter settled at a value that survived. it is evidence about the parameter. present-tense interiority discloses an ongoing process: the cost is being paid now, the outcome is live. it converts the parameter into a variable. so the inverse relation holds against present-tense interiority only, and biographical disclosure of a metabolized catastrophe is not an exception to the rule but an instance of it running the other way.

this also absorbs what is usually listed as the proposition's escape valve. retrospective interiority, rendered after the figure's function completes, is past-tense by construction. guido orefice's interior becomes fully visible only once the game he built for his son has collapsed. that is the same principle, not a separate observation.

four consequences, each independently checkable.

the mode concentrates at the scale of the scene. sustained present-tense interiority is the default condition of a protagonist across a long narrative. films that hold the mode across full length, like sicario, do it by withholding alejandro's interior almost entirely until the last act, at which point the floor gets demolished on purpose.

attending figures are usually secondary. mycroft, gus fring, carolyn martens, al swearengen. the narrative approaches their interiors obliquely because the function requires opacity.

first-person narration almost never belongs to the attending. watson narrates. holmes can't. this is formal necessity under the proposition, and it explains why the watson device is near-universal across the tradition todorov (1977) maps.

a floor can be dismantled without killing anyone. open the present-tense interior and it goes. this is the cheaper of the two demolition methods and it leaves the figure alive.

5. the calibration band

proposition 2. the mode requires the resident to sit in a narrow competence band relative to the attending, and it degrades in characteristic ways at both edges.

below the band the relationship goes custodial. an incompetent resident is being managed, and what the reader registers is condescension where transmission should be.

above the band the gap closes and the floor is redundant. two competent figures coordinating produce a different structure, which is gus fring and mike ehrmantraut, and which generates none of the mode's tension.

john watson is the tradition's best-calibrated resident and the bbc series owes more to that calibration than to any other single choice. watson is a military physician: brave, perceptive, competent in registers where holmes is impaired. his failure to follow holmes reads as a real epistemic gap with no authorial convenience in it. freeman's performance holds the calibration through a repertoire that communicates comprehension of the situation alongside non-comprehension of the reasoning, which is the resident's exact position.

ginzburg (1989) places holmesian deduction inside an evidential paradigm shared with morelli's connoisseurship and freud's clinical technique, all proceeding from marginal involuntary details to conclusions unavailable by direct inspection. this explains why the gap is unusually stable in detective fiction: the evidential paradigm is tacit knowledge in polanyi's (1966) sense, and tacit knowledge does not fully transfer through explanation. the resident can be shown the clue and still be unable to read it. moretti (2000) supplies the historical complement, tracing how the genre negotiated reader access against detective supremacy.

6. the scene grammar

barthes (1974) separates the codes organizing narrative. the hermeneutic code poses enigmas and delays their resolution. the proairetic governs sequences of action. ordinary suspense keeps the hermeneutic open: will he survive, will the mole be caught, will the bomb come apart in time.

the attending mode performs a substitution. it closes the hermeneutic early, by establishing the attending's competence, and reopens tension somewhere barthes does not have a name for. the reader stops asking whether the situation resolves and starts asking whether the resident can execute at the level it demands. call that the pedagogical register.

the resulting texture is specific: high arousal running underneath a background certainty of resolution. ngai (2005) would place it among the minor affects, since it never delivers the release of resolved suspense. the pleasure is closer to watching a skilled performance whose success is assumed and whose execution is absorbing anyway.

five cases.

mann, collateral (2004), the nightclub. vincent needs max, a cab driver, to impersonate him in a negotiation with a cartel principal. the briefing is flat and procedural. the audience has ample evidence of vincent's capability, so all the tension is max's execution under conditions vincent structured and cannot enter. the organizing irony, which mann uses fully: a civilian is walked through a cartel negotiation in the cadence a surgeon would use for a first chest tube.

demme, the silence of the lambs (1991), the interviews. the nominal enigma is buffalo bill. inside the lecter-starling scenes it recedes almost completely. lecter poses cognitive tasks, starling attempts them, and the tension is her performance. his characteristic invitation to reason from first principles about what the killer does is an examination question from someone holding the answer. žižek (1991) notes that the classical detective's knowledge is structurally prior to its demonstration, which applies harder to lecter, whose demonstration is deferred as an instrument of control.

chandor, margin call (2011), the boardroom. tuld makes the junior analyst explain the firm's exposure to a room of senior executives while the firm faces destruction. tuld's composure is total and his framing of the request is explicitly performative, so the catastrophe recedes and the scene becomes an oral exam. the instruction to explain it simply converts an existential financial event into a communicative task with a pass condition.

spielberg, bridge of spies (2015), the abel sequences. donovan delivers escalating bad news and abel repeatedly fails to react, which becomes the film's structural signature. the courtroom scenes invert the expected arrangement: the defendant supplies the ground his attorney stands on to mount a defense his own society opposes.

villeneuve, sicario (2015), the border crossing and the tunnel. at the crossing, alejandro and the delta operators read the developing ambush as procedure while kate reads it at the pace of first exposure. the firefight resolves without real doubt about its outcome, and the actual tension is whether kate can process fast enough to act inside it. the tunnel extends the structure across a longer duration: she has been allowed to observe a procedure whose plan is withheld, and the sustained question is whether she stays functional inside an operation she cannot read.

sicario also supplies the mode's most important complication, taken up in §12. the floor is genuine and it serves an agenda kate never agreed to. the attending was steady the whole time. the procedure was not hers.

7. the inverted floor

the mode is independent of ethical content, and the cases where the attending is a criminal prove it. mike ehrmantraut converts panic into sequence for men he holds in contempt. winston wolfe reduces a catastrophe to logistics inside thirty seconds. al swearengen supplies the institutional ground the entire camp of deadwood runs on. gus fring is the most architecturally complete instance in prestige television and his composure maintains an enterprise that destroys everyone inside it.

what transmits is a relationship to contingency, and contingency-management is ethically inert. weber's (1919) ethic of responsibility describes the orientation exactly, and any moral position can adopt it.

proposition 3. an antagonist can generate ontological security of a malign variety, where the settled background confidence concerns the certainty of hostile design instead of the certainty of protection, and this reduces anxiety.

moriarty in the bbc series is the case. the series trains its audience to relate to him the way it trains them to relate to holmes: by presupposition. the audience learns to assume holmes has solved it within minutes, and it learns to assume moriarty's design is already complete and already accounts for whatever is currently visible. both presuppositions are complexity-reducing in luhmann's sense. the audience stops calculating.

the affective result needs one distinction stated to be visible. dread and anxiety are different: dread takes an object, anxiety is the response to indeterminacy. total adversarial competence removes randomness, so it raises dread and lowers anxiety at the same time. the world becomes hostile and coherent.

that structure is formally identical to conspiracy belief as hofstadter (1964) describes it. the paranoid style attributes vast events to deliberate design, and the compensation it offers is trading an indifferent universe for a legible one. sedgwick (2003) supplies the complement: paranoid reading is strong theory, built to anticipate all surprise, and its appeal is the promise that nothing arrives unprepared for.

so moriarty is misdescribed as a criminal foil to a detective. he is a foil to the trust the detective generates, which is why the series sustains his structural presence long after his death. a criminal antagonist dies with his plans. a generator of malign ontological security persists as a permanent condition of the narrative's epistemology.

8. sherlock

the bbc series has been criticized for implausible deductions, physically impossible solutions, and systematic refusal of the reader-competition contract auden (1948) and cawelti (1976) place at the center of classical detective fiction. the criticisms are accurate and immaterial, because the series runs on a different engine.

the base shape. holmes and watson in the mode. cases function as patients. watson's fear and moral reaction are the resident's natural responses inside the operating theater. holmes's impatience is the attending's orientation toward work already understood. the audience occupies watson's chair and gets the same structure he does.

the scaled shape. mycroft instantiates the shape one level up, with holmes as resident. the brothers differ in modality: holmes's competence manifests as performance, mycroft's as infrastructure. holmes deduces aloud, mycroft has already arranged matters. the mind palace sequences make it explicit, putting mycroft in the supervisory position and having him prompt his brother toward what he missed. the consequence is a second-order floor. even where holmes appears endangered, mycroft's implied presence signals the situation is sound at a level not yet visible, and the serbian extraction confirms it retroactively.

the inverted shape. moriarty, §7. the three are related by transformation: base unit, same unit scaled, same unit with valence inverted. fractal in the precise sense, the same relational structure recurring at multiple scales with modification.

the collision. "the reichenbach fall" (2012) is the series' most complete statement because it operates all three floors and then removes them in order.

it opens in ordinary first-floor operation. holmes is publicly discredited, watson and lestrade react with alarm, holmes appears unbothered, and the audience's trained response is to assume a procedure is running. mycroft monitors the international threat environment, supplying second-floor assurance. the inverted floor asserts itself gradually as the evidence accumulates that events are tracking moriarty's design while holmes's design stays invisible.

the rooftop executes the collapse. holmes identifies the remaining operational variable, that moriarty must hold a recall mechanism and that the mechanism is leverageable while he lives. that is the attending locating the last step of the procedure. moriarty's suicide removes the variable. the false floor triggers, and both genuine floors go with it: holmes is rendered visibly speechless for the only time in the series, and mycroft's institutional power is structurally incapable of addressing a decentralized network of unknown operatives.

then the cycle restarts compressed. perspective shifts to watson. holmes's voice on the telephone reactivates the trained response and the audience starts rebuilding the first floor from inside the rubble. the closing sequence confirms both genuine floors and leaves the inverted one standing as a permanent condition.

why implausibility is load-bearing. the deductions have to exceed what the audience can follow, and this follows directly from §5. if holmes's reasoning became followable in real time the epistemic gap would close, the floor would go redundant, and the mode would collapse into ordinary procedural competence. the surrealism holds the gap open.

the floating on-screen deduction text is an elegant instrument for this. it grants access to the data holmes perceives while withholding the synthesis, which parks the viewer in permanent near-comprehension. polanyi again: shown the particulars, unable to achieve the integration.

proposition 4. the mode is structurally hospitable to serial narrative and unstable in closed narrative, because seriality needs a guarantee that each episode's crisis is survivable and the floor supplies exactly that.

serial narrative has a standing problem: episodes must generate real tension while preserving the conditions of continuation. eco (1979) analyzes the fleming solution, iteration of a fixed combinatorial scheme. the floor is more elegant, because it guarantees continuation at the level of the audience's affective contract and leaves plot mechanics free to generate genuine local danger. procedural television is an attending-mode machine, which explains why the form keeps generating figures in the mode across otherwise unrelated programs.

the closed-narrative half is weaker and should be stated as such. the argument is that a closed narrative's ending is its last chance to make the whole mean something, that an untested premise contributes nothing to that meaning, and that the ending is therefore under pressure to test whatever the narrative established. kermode (1967) supports the first clause. he does not supply the rest, and the inference from "endings confer significance retroactively" to "closed narratives must interrogate their premises" is doing work he did not do.

what the proposition does explain cleanly is the late decline of the bbc series, and more specifically than the usual complaint about plausibility. eurus adds a figure of superior capability without adding a new transformation of the base shape. she is neither a further scaling nor a further inversion, only a repetition of the moriarty function without the calibration that made it run. the series shifted from fractal elaboration to conventional escalation of stakes, which is a mode it was never built to sustain.

9. martin

a song of ice and fire is organized around the construction and demolition of floors, and this accounts for its affective signature more completely than the usual explanations about political realism or character mortality.

three floors, three scales. the targaryen dynasty supplies the civilizational one: for three centuries every political actor in westeros operated inside an implicit understanding that a final arbiter existed whose intervention would be decisive. tywin supplies the familial one, the competence that can be relied on to correct any lannister excess. eddard supplies the paternal one his children pursue their own paths inside.

each is demolished and the manner is diagnostic. the targaryen floor is destroyed from within by the dance of the dragons, a succession conflict internal to the family that eliminates the dragons and with them the guarantee. tywin dies by crossbow at his son's hands in circumstances of maximal indignity. eddard is executed on the steps of the great sept while his daughters watch.

the aftermath grammar. martin's rendering of the post-floor condition is his most significant technical achievement. sansa in the chapters after her father's execution goes procedural, performing courtesy on autopilot because courtesy was the last instruction she received. she is a resident whose attending collapsed mid-procedure and who keeps executing the final step she was given.

arya's arc is kinetically opposite and structurally identical: an attempt to build a floor from nothing, out of recited names, adopted identities, and eventually formal training.

cersei after tywin is the most instructive, because she believes she inherited the floor-generating capacity and she did not. her calm is performed, sustained by will, and visible as such to the reader. that visibility is §4 running in reverse: present-tense effort on display converts her floor into a variable, which is why nobody stands on it. and the performance is actively harmful, since it suppresses the alarm her decisions warrant.

durkheim (1897) supplies the sociological analogue. anomie is normlessness following the disruption of a regulating structure, and his central observation is that the disruption need not be a worsening, since sudden prosperity produces anomie as reliably as sudden ruin. what matters is losing the framework action was calibrated against.

proposition 5. floors fail two structurally distinct ways with distinct aftermaths. in withdrawal, the attending departs and their competence was real. in revelation, the competence is disclosed to have been insufficient the whole time.

the aftermaths differ in kind. withdrawal produces grief and unpreparedness and leaves the resident's model of the past intact. gandalf's fall in moria is pure withdrawal, and nothing the fellowship believed about the world needs revision afterward.

revelation produces retroactive epistemic collapse. every decision made in trust has to be reinterpreted, and the resident loses their own history as a reliable guide.

eddard's death is compound, and the compounding is where its power comes from. he departs, and the manner of his departure discloses that his composure had been tracking a situation he misread throughout. sansa and arya lose their father and simultaneously lose the frame his instructions made sense inside.

the reichenbach rooftop is revelation in pure form. holmes's floor does not withdraw. it is disclosed, in one gesture by moriarty, to have been contingent on an assumption that was never guaranteed.

proposition 6. two floors operate in any narrative using the mode. the diegetic floor characters stand on, and the extradiegetic floor the audience stands on, constituted by generic convention. they can be aligned or opposed, and the relation is an independent authorial resource.

the extradiegetic floor is the structural confidence that the protagonist survives, the mystery resolves, the form's contract holds. booth (1961) describes the machinery that establishes it.

the bbc sherlock maintains an exceptionally strong extradiegetic floor, which is why it can demolish its diegetic floor spectacularly in "the reichenbach fall" without destabilizing the viewer's relationship to the program.

martin's innovation is demolishing the extradiegetic one. eddard's execution destabilizes readers far past what losing a viewpoint character would ordinarily do, because the convention itself gets withdrawn. frye (1957) treats generic expectation as the ground of literary intelligibility, which gives the measure of the move: martin removes the reader's capacity to infer outcome from form. the reading experience then mirrors the anomic condition of the characters, and the mirroring is where the work's peculiar power comes from.

10. off the page

the mode's portability suggests it models something general about how agents borrow competence. four independent literatures describe it under other names.

pedagogy. vygotsky's (1978) zone of proximal development formalizes the gap. wood, bruner and ross (1976) name the temporary structure spanning it scaffolding. lave and wenger (1991) describe legitimate peripheral participation, where a newcomer does real work at the edge of a practice under conditions that absorb their errors. that is the mode's social form exactly. kate macer is a legitimate peripheral participant in an operation whose structure is withheld from her, and the withholding is a pedagogical act with an undisclosed purpose. bosk (1979) documents the surgical case ethnographically and gawande (2002) supplies the practitioner's view from inside.

this literature also explains why condition four reads flat. an explicitly pedagogical figure produces a different affective structure, one where the resident's growth is the acknowledged subject and the stakes soften accordingly. the attending instructs because the situation requires the other person to function, so the instruction comes out as procedure.

development. winnicott's (1965) holding environment is the mode's developmental form. the good-enough caregiver provides an environment reliable enough that the child can explore and err without carrying the calculation of catastrophic outcomes. winnicott's key observation is that the value lies entirely in reliability and perfection contributes nothing, which is condition five in developmental terms. erikson's (1950) basic trust names the resulting disposition. winnicott also specifies the endpoint: the child internalizes the holding environment and can supply it for themselves. §11 is about how rarely that shows up in fiction.

theology. the bhagavad gita dramatizes the mode with unusual explicitness. arjuna is paralyzed before a civilizational catastrophe, and krishna, occupying the structurally subordinate position of charioteer, delivers an extended attending intervention whose content is that the outcome is already determined and arjuna's task is execution without attachment to result. the theophany of the eleventh chapter discloses that the floor is coextensive with reality. the tension throughout is pedagogical in §6's sense: the question is whether the resident can be brought to act.

pure land buddhism institutionalizes it through jiriki and tariki, self-power and other-power. the practitioner is relieved of the requirement to possess sufficient competence and asked only to trust the vow. that is the resident's position formalized as soteriology.

the christian case is the informative failure. free will as classically construed entails that the divine attending will permit irreversible error, so the floor is volitional: present, sovereign, under no obligation to intervene in any particular instance. §11 argues institutional floors converge on this structure, and that the conversion has consequences.

institutions. bagehot's lender of last resort, §1. schelling (1966) describes the same structure in deterrence, where credibility produces the stabilizing effect and execution stays perpetually deferred. snyder (1997) supplies the resident's dilemma directly: allies calibrate against twin fears of abandonment and entrapment, and calibration is only possible while the guarantee reads as unconditional. weber (1919) explains how a personal floor becomes institutional through routinization, and arendt (1970) clarifies what is lost when routinization fails.

weick (1993) documents the operational consequence at mann gulch with unusual precision. when the structure of authority collapsed, the firefighters lost the capacity to make sense of their situation, and the sensemaking collapse produced the fatalities. the fire was survivable throughout. weick and sutcliffe (2001) generalize to high-reliability organizations.

11. the custodial paradox

proposition 7. the floor produces the behavioral conditions of its own erosion. those inside the field act freely, so they accumulate exposures they would otherwise avoid, so the accumulated exposure eventually exceeds the attending's absorptive capacity, so the floor goes conditional at exactly the moment it is most needed.

this is minsky's (1986) financial instability hypothesis generalized past finance. minsky's insight is that stability destabilizes: a long stretch without crisis induces actors to cut their margins of safety, so fragility rises as a direct function of apparent robustness.

one correction to the usual statement. the mechanism is not atrophy. atrophy implies prior possession, and the cases are non-development.

martin. the targaryen guarantee relieved the great houses of any need to build independent mechanisms for resolving conflict among themselves. three centuries of that relief produced a political ecosystem containing no such mechanisms, so removing the guarantee produced war rather than a return to some prior equilibrium. the houses never had the capacity to lose.

succession. the roy children's incapacity is a direct product of logan's competence. judgment was never required of them, so judgment never developed, and the floor's removal exposed an absence that decades of proximity to power had actively produced.

alliance politics. snyder's dilemma acquires a temporal dimension here. a guarantee operating reliably for decades permits its beneficiaries to underinvest in independent capability. underinvestment raises the guarantee's cost to the guarantor, which raises the guarantor's incentive to make it conditional, which converts an ontological floor into the volitional one §10 identified in the christian case. the dynamic is endogenous and needs no external adversary to run.

development. winnicott's endpoint is the solution. a floor that successfully transfers its function terminates without collapsing. so the custodial paradox describes what happens when transfer fails, and how often it fails across these cases suggests transfer is hard.

proposition 8. completed transfer can occupy the terminal position of a narrative and no other position, because it dissolves the engine.

this is a correction to the usual claim that fiction avoids depicting transfer. fiction depicts it constantly, at endings. coming-of-age narratives close on exactly this: the resident can now do it alone, and the story stops. what fiction cannot do is depict transfer and then continue, because the relationship's dissolution through success generates no crisis and no image, and there is nowhere further to go.

so narratives needing a middle after the attending's departure substitute the two alternatives. the attending's death, which forces premature transfer and generates maximum crisis. or serial suspension, which freezes the relationship indefinitely, which is §8's procedural machine.

the mentor's death, entrenched enough that campbell encoded it as structurally necessary, is on this account an artifact of dramatic economy. it carries no information about how competence actually propagates.

12. differential legibility

consider a figure with the attending's epistemic advantage who directs all of it at their own acceleration. petyr baelish. mantel's thomas cromwell. locke lamora. they refuse the conventional path to advancement because they can see leverage the path-following majority cannot. baelish converts an unrequited affection and a well-placed lie into the political realignment of a continent at almost no cost. cromwell accumulates a stack of non-overlapping competences in law, banking, languages, trade and construction that nobody else at the tudor court has, and the stack makes opportunities visible to him that are structurally invisible to his rivals.

proposition 9. the attending and the asymmetric operator are two applications of one capacity: differential legibility, reading a situation at a resolution unavailable to the other agents inside it.

both require the capacity, and this much is tight. reducing complexity for someone else requires having already reduced it for yourself, which requires reading at higher resolution than they can. converting small inputs into disproportionate outputs requires perceiving affordances the path-followers cannot see. same reading operation, two directions: the attending spends it on others' stability, the operator spends it on their own acceleration. both skip the middle path of ordinary incremental participation, and both are composed, since a situation you can read at high resolution does not induce panic.

this is the weakest of the nine and should be labeled. the evidence that it is one capacity rather than two that co-occur is that figures perform both without apparent switching cost. baelish gives sansa a genuine floor, instructing her in political operation with the flat pedagogical cadence, while using the same legibility to accelerate himself, and the procedure he is running on her is not the one she thinks she joined. that is alejandro and kate exactly, which suggests the compromised floor is the natural form the mode takes when the differentially legible agent has objectives of their own. co-occurrence in the same figure is evidence of a shared substrate. it is not proof of identity, and nothing here rules out two capacities that happen to travel together.

simmel (1906) supplies the sociological grounding: possessing information others lack is itself social power, generating an asymmetry that structures every interaction it obtains in. klein (1998) supplies the cognitive grounding, describing how expertise permits direct perception of situational patterns that novices must laboriously construct.

cromwell repays study more than baelish. baelish's plays are extractive and zero-sum, destabilizing systems and harvesting the fragments, which makes his method spectacular and largely unrepeatable. cromwell's is accumulative: each competence multiplies the optionality of the others and the perceptual advantage compounds. mantel's achievement in wolf hall is rendering the compounding legible from inside, showing a man who sees a room differently because he has been a soldier, a banker, a lawyer and a merchant, and who is therefore calm in it.

13. scope

this is a claim about fiction. §11 says the mentor's death carries no information about how competence propagates in the world. the same applies to the whole apparatus. what gets described is what narratives do with the structure, and the four off-page literatures in §10 are evidence that the structure is general, not evidence that fiction models it accurately.

the parts are not new. luhmann, winnicott, vygotsky, bagehot, minsky and bosk each described a piece. the claim here is that they describe one thing and that the unification predicts things none of them predicts alone. §4, §5, §11 and §12 are where the unification earns anything.

it is descriptive, not evaluative. nothing here says work in the mode is better or worse than work outside it.

proposition 9 is underdetermined, §12.

the closed-narrative half of proposition 4 leans on kermode harder than kermode supports, §8.

untreated: competing floors. two attending figures with incompatible procedures in one room, and whose floor the resident ends up standing on. this happens and nothing above predicts the outcome.

14. prior art

luhmann. trust as complexity reduction. the engine of §3, and the reason the mode transmits at all.

laing, giddens. ontological security. the resulting state, and giddens's invisibility observation predicts §9's aftermath grammar.

winnicott. the holding environment. condition five in developmental form, plus the terminus §11 turns on.

erikson. basic trust.

vygotsky, bruner, lave and wenger. the pedagogy literature. the same structure under three other names, none of which cite the others' domain.

15. summary

a figure relates to something extraordinary as operational, and their composure functions as ground other people act on. five conditions: extraordinary situation, resolved relation, transmissibility, instruction issued flatly, and capacity retained but withheld. the last one works through availability, not use.

it transmits because trust reduces complexity. the resident stops holding the full space of outcomes and holds the immediate task. the composure reads as earned because a prior catastrophe is offstage, which is what makes the calm carry information about survivability.

the floor is a parameter, and it works while it stays one. present-tense interiority converts it into a variable and it stops working, which is why attending figures are opaque, secondary, and never the narrator. past-tense interiority does the opposite and is what funds the floor in the first place.

the resident has to sit in a narrow band. too far below and it reads as management, too close and the floor is redundant.

tension moves from whether the situation resolves to whether the resident can execute, which is the mode's whole affective signature.

none of it is moral. the floor holds for lecter and fring and swearengen. inverted, it holds for moriarty, whose total competence makes the world hostile and coherent at once, which raises dread and lowers anxiety.

serial narrative wants the mode because the floor guarantees survivability while the plot generates local danger. closed narrative demolishes it, and demolition comes in two kinds with different wreckage: withdrawal leaves the past intact, revelation takes the past with it.

two floors are always running, the characters' and the audience's. martin's move was removing the second one.

and the floor produces the conditions of its own failure, because everyone standing on it never builds what its absence would require. that runs in westeros, in the roy family, and in every alliance guarantee that has held long enough for its beneficiaries to stop arming.

transfer solves it and fiction can only show transfer at the end, so it kills the mentor instead.

whatever lets a person read a room at a resolution nobody else in it has can be spent outward, on other people's footing, or inward, on their own speed. baelish does both at once and so does alejandro, and neither of them tells the resident which one is running.

you are standing on somebody else's floor. you did not build it and you cannot see under it.
